Skomakarekällaren (The shoemaker basement) on the corner of Slottsbacken and Bollhusgränd with the entrance from the upper level of Slottsbacken was during the 1800s a popular restaurant. The guests were people from the Stockholm stock exchange, members of the swedish parliament and journalists. It was also called Bakfickan and was easier class.
Over Skomakarekällarens door, a plate surrounded by currant leaves was placed.
It is likely that it had been recycled in several stages. In the early 1700s Källaren Drufvan were placed in the basement of the east wing. Drufvan was replaced by Källaren Draken, which opened in the late 1700's, this time in the west wing, the same place as Slottskällaren. The plate was probably moved because it was a good symbol for a restaurant.
In 1996 a the west wing was re-opened for dining, this time called Myntkrogen, which link to the Royal Coin Cabinet. Today lunch is served daily and evening dining is available for events with more than 15 people. Along with the museum, the restaurant can arrange guided tours and conferences followed by dinner. During the summer we are moving bar and grill out on the courtyard.
